Sending out birth announcements is a social custom that has been around a long time. Recipients know that you are just spreading the wonderful news of your new addition and feel no obligation to send a gift.
Do not put any gift registry information on your announcements. If they feel inclined to purchase a gift for baby, they will find out on their own what is still needed and where to get it from other friends and family.
